Young Talents Present Innovations in the field of Humanitarian Demining at “Galaxy Cup”

Innovations by young talents in the field of humanitarian demining were successfully presented today at the Innovation and Educational Park of the Mine Action Center of the Republic of Serbia.

The event was jointly organized by the Mine Action Center of the Republic of Serbia and the Academy of Technical and Educational Vocational Studies from Niš, as part of the “Galaxy Cup”, with the aim of encouraging the involvement of young generations in the development of modern technological solutions for the detection of explosive remnants of war.

Participants, students from the Nikola Tesla Electrical Engineering School from Belgrade and the Mija Stanimirović Electrical Engineering School from Niš, presented their innovative technical solutions and ideas in the field of humanitarian demining.

Although they have not personally experienced the horrors of war, these young, talented people clearly recognize the consequences that conflicts have on people’s lives, both in the world and in our environment. It is this awareness that has motivated them, through knowledge and innovation, to offer solutions that can contribute to greater security in this area.

Four innovations were presented on the topic of using artificial intelligence in humanitarian demining, detection of explosive remnants of war (ERW), and integrated search systems for contaminated terrain.

On this occasion, Pedro Basto, Innovation Research Program Manager at the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), also joined via internet connection. The Serbian Mine Action Centre is a co-chair member of the Technical Group on Innovation, which operates within the GICHD.

This event represents an important step in connecting the education system and the security sector, as well as in affirming domestic technological innovations with the potential for international application.

The Mine Action Center will continue to provide support to young experts and innovators, convinced that knowledge, creativity and new generations are the key to a safer future.

The event was attended by representatives of the institutions of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense, the Serbian Army, demining companies and defence industry.
