State Ceremony Commemorating the Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Republic of Serbia today marks the National Remembrance Day in honor of the victims of genocide committed against Serbs, Roma, and Jews throughout the territory of the Independent State of Croatia during the period from 1941 to 1945.

The Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust, Genocide and Other Victims of Fascism in the Second World War was organized by the Committee of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for Fostering the Traditions of Liberation Wars, within the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs.

The Director of the Mine Action Centre of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Bojan Glamoclija, attended the central commemorative event held at the “Jajinci” Memorial Park, a site where thousands of innocent civilians—including Serbs, Jews, and Roma—were killed during the Nazi occupation.

The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ms. Ana Brnabić, in her capacity as the envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia, emphasized that remembering the victims of fascist terror is a moral obligation of both the state and society as a whole.

The event was attended by representatives of state institutions, the diplomatic corps, religious communities, as well as associations of survivors.

This national day of remembrance was established in 1992 by the Law on the Establishment of the Museum of Genocide Victims and permanently preserves the memory of April 22, 1945, the day when the last group of prisoners broke out from the Jasenovac concentration camp complex.
