Implementation Begins on the “Rakovica 5” UXO Clearance Project

Clearance operations have commenced in the Municipality of Rakovica as part of the “Rakovica 5” Project for the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO), prepared by the Mine Action Centre of the Republic of Serbia.

Prior to the commencement of operations, representatives of the Mine Action Centre inspected the documentation and equipment to be used during the implementation of the Project, following which the contractor was formally authorized to commence work.

The operations are being carried out in accordance with the project documentation, applicable national regulations, and the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), under continuous professional supervision and quality control throughout all stages of implementation.

The contaminated area in the territory of Rakovica is estimated at approximately 182 hectares.

The Mine Action Centre has prepared a total of five projects aimed at the gradual elimination of the risks posed by UXO remaining from the 1999 bombing. Of the five projects prepared, one has been completed, two are currently under implementation, while the necessary conditions have been established for the future implementation of the remaining two projects.

Funding for the implementation of the UXO clearance projects in the territory of the Municipality of Rakovica has been provided by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, with additional support through donations from the Governments of the United States of America and the Republic of Korea, facilitated through the ITF Enhancing Human Security (ITF).

The Mine Action Centre urges citizens to comply with all prescribed safety measures, refrain from entering marked areas where clearance activities are being conducted, and observe all barriers, warning tape, and warning signs in place.
