Commencement of Ponikve Airport-4 Clearance Project

In the area near the runway of the former military airport Ponikve, cluster munitions clearance operations officially began today within the project Ponikve Airport – 4, City of Užice, developed by the Serbian Mine Action Centre.

The works commenced with the official handover to the contractor “STOP Mines” from Pale, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the monitoring organization for this project is “Trotil” Ltd. from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The aim of the project is to detect and remove unexploded cluster munitions, which pose a serious threat to human safety and the environment.

The project is funded by donations from the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Embassy of the United States of America, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, through ITF – Enhancing Human Security, an international organization based in Slovenia.

The works will be carried out over the coming period and are part of broader efforts to make the Ponikve Airport area safe for future use.
