Participation of the Mine Action Centre in the 4th International Mine Action Conference in Azerbaijan

The 4th International Mine Action Conference, entitled “Humanitarian Demining for Urban Recovery – Setting Standards of Excellence for Safe Settlements,” was held in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. The conference was organised by the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) and the United Nations in Azerbaijan.

The conference brought together more than 400 participants from 60 countries, including representatives of governments, national mine action centres, government institutions, the United Nations, international organisations, donors, and other relevant stakeholders.

The main focus of the conference was the role of humanitarian demining in the recovery of areas affected by armed conflict, as well as the creation of safe living conditions for local populations and the sustainable development of cities and communities.

Mr. Bojan Glamočlija, Director of the Mine Action Centre of the Republic of Serbia, participated as one of the panellists, alongside representatives from Lebanon, Cambodia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

His presentation focused on the Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) situation in the Republic of Serbia and the importance of releasing contaminated land for development and reconstruction. He highlighted that, following the completion of mine action activities, cleared areas are used for agriculture, construction, roads, industry, and other infrastructure projects.

The conference addressed issues related to the implementation of international standards and best practices, the development of national capacities, the use of modern technologies and innovative solutions in mine action, as well as the integration of demining activities with infrastructure reconstruction, population return, and economic development processes.

The experiences of countries facing various forms of contamination were also presented, with particular emphasis on the application of new technologies, the improvement of operational methods, and the integration of mine action into broader recovery and development processes.

The participation of the Mine Action Centre of the Republic of Serbia provided an important opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience, present the achievements of the Republic of Serbia in the field of mine action, and establish contacts with potential international partners and donors.
