Iraq based Al Marjan NGO Visit to SMAC

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, representative of an Iraq based non-governmental organization Al Marjan NGO, Ms Iyat Dusche, visited the Serbian Mine Action Centre.

The visit was aimed at exchanging experiences in the field of mine action. During the meeting with SMAC Director, Mr Bojan Glamočlija, Ms Dusche discussed the challenges faced by organizations dealing with humanitarian demining, as well as technical innovations and best practices in this area.

In addition, possibilities for joint projects and trainings that would contribute to increasing security and rebuilding communities in conflict-affected areas were discussed.

“Only by helping each other we can make the world a better place, especially in conflict-affected regions like Iraq.” Demining is key to ensuring the safety of communities, especially in poor areas where the risk of accidental detonation is high,” Ms Dusche said.

Landmines pose a serious threat to children, farmers and ordinary citizens, hindering their ability to live and work safely. By working together to remove these dangerous remnants of conflict, we can protect vulnerable populations, provide secure access to essential resources and boost agricultural growth, paving the way for a safer and more prosperous future for all.

“The cooperation of international organizations is essential to ensure security and assistance to people living in post-conflict areas around the world.” I believe that our future initiatives will contribute to even greater efficiency in solving the problems posed by explosive remnants of war (ERW),” said SMAC Director, Mr Glamočlija.

The visit also included a tour of the SMAC Innovation and Educational Park, where, among other things, Ms Dusche had the opportunity to familiarize herself with the internationally recognized explosive ordnance disposal training courses that are conducted at the SMAC.
