Commencement of “Ponikve Airport – 7” Project
The implementation of Cluster Munitions Clearance Project for the “Airport Ponikve – 7” Site, the City of Užice, began on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, with the introduction into works of the contractor NGO IN Demining, Pale, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
SMAC developed this project, which is financially supported by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Government of the USA and Government of the Republic of the South Korea through the ITF Enhancing Human Security.
Clearance of the site will create the necessary prerequisites for obtaining all the necessary permits for flying, then the reconstruction of the Ponikve Airport and the construction of new infrastructure facilities.
In 1999, the former military airport “Ponikve” was repeatedly hit by aerial bombs – rockets and other large-mass missiles, and on that occasion, the cluster munitions that were in the cluster bomb-containers, as well as other munition, were scattered on the surrounding land.
So far, five SMAC projects have been implemented at the Ponikve airport.
