Commencement of Implementation of ERW Clearance Project for Underground Garage – Vlajkovićeva Street Site

Implementation of the ERW Clearance Project for the underground garage – Vlajkovićeva Street Site in Belgrade, which was developed by the SMAC at the request of CSI Parking Investment ltd., began on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

SMAC representatives checked the documentation and equipment that will be used in the field, after which the contractor Millennium Team ltd., Belgrade, was introduced into the works in accordance with phase 1 of the Project.

Suspected area that needs to be cleared is located in the immediate vicinity of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

The construction of an underground garage on several levels is planned on the area to be cleared from ERW.

Based on the knowledge that during the works on the construction of the internal piles of the garage, an unexploded artillery shell (MERZER – 300mm), about 250 kg, was found at a depth of approximately 8 meters, the SMAC representatives conducted general survey of the site on September 23, 2024, in order to collect additional information relevant to the development of the project.

Given that an unexploded artillery shell of large caliber (300mm) was found at the site, as well as the fact that in the previous century during World War One, the territory of the City of Belgrade was attacked by heavy artillery, it was estimated that the area on which the construction of the underground garage is planned in Vlajkovićeva Street is suspected area.

Furthermore, the estimation is suported by the fact that Belgrade was the target of bombing in the Second World War on several occasions, and even after the conflict, ERW was left unremoved on the territory of the City of Belgrade, which is confirmed by the accidental discoveries of ERW and past experiences in clearing areas from ERW.

The goal of the project is to eliminate the danger to people, property and the environment from ERW and to create conditions for the client for safe and secure planning and execution of subsequent infrastructure works.
