Commencement of Works on the “Ponikve – 5” Project
Another cluster munitions clearance project, titled “Ponikve Airport – 5”, has commenced at the former military airport Ponikve. The project began with the introduction of the contractor NGO “IN Demining” from Pale, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in accordance with the project developed by the Serbian Mine Action Centre, which is also responsible for monitoring implementation and quality control of the works.
The monitoring organization for this project is “Trotil” Ltd. from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The “Ponikve Airport – 5” project is part of the broader humanitarian demining process in this area. In the previous period, five clearance projects developed by the Serbian Mine Action Centre were implemented at Ponikve Airport: “Ponikve 1”, “Ponikve 2”, “Ponikve 3”, “Ponikve 6”, and “Fence – Phase II”, while the implementation of the “Ponikve 4” project is currently ongoing.
The implementation of these projects creates the necessary preconditions for the safe reconstruction of Ponikve Airport and the development of new infrastructure essential for its transition from military to civilian use.
The project is being implemented thanks to donations from the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Embassy of the United States of America, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, through ITF – Enhancing Human Security.
